For many women in abusive relationships, leaving is a difficult decision that becomes even more complicated when pets are involved. Abusers often use threats against pets as a form of control, making survivors fear for their animals’ safety. Sadly, a significant number of domestic violence shelters are not equipped to house pets, forcing women to make an impossible choice: stay in a harmful environment or leave and abandon their beloved pets.
The Purple Leash Project seeks to address this heartbreaking issue by helping domestic violence shelters become pet-friendly. This program, launched by Purina in partnership with RedRover, aims to give women the peace of mind that they and their pets can escape to safety together.
How the Purple Leash Project Works
The Purple Leash Project provides financial grants to shelters, helping them create safe spaces where both survivors and their pets can be housed. With these grants, shelters can build the necessary infrastructure—such as kennels, pet-friendly rooms, and outdoor areas—so that women do not have to leave their pets behind. The project also covers veterinary expenses, pet supplies, and other resources to ensure that animals are well cared for during a family’s transition.
As of now, only 19% of domestic violence shelters across the country are pet-friendly, but the Purple Leash Project is aiming to change that. Their goal is to make at least 25% of U.S. domestic violence shelters pet-friendly by 2025. This initiative ensures that women can focus on leaving abusive situations without worrying about the safety of their pets, allowing them to start their journey toward healing without guilt or hesitation
Why This Matters
For many survivors, pets are not just animals—they are family. Pets often provide emotional support during the most difficult times, helping women stay resilient while facing abuse. Losing that companionship when trying to escape can be devastating. Abusers are aware of this bond and often threaten or harm pets as a way to keep women from leaving.
By supporting shelters that accept pets, the Purple Leash Project removes one of the major barriers that prevent women from seeking safety. Women no longer have to face the impossible choice between saving themselves and protecting their pets. This initiative saves lives—both human and animal.
